Albums:

Lungs (2009)

The more you know….

I have had many requests to feature more ladies that rock it out and I couldn’t think of anyone better then Miss Florence Welch herself. Florence Welch, solo vocalist for Florence and the Machine is a one woman show. Although she does rely on the backing of several musicians, this woman rocks it out. The band started paying gigs in local London joints and after seven months of their album “Lungs” release they had already topped the UK billboard charts. This publicity accompanied an 11 city “Cosmic Love Tour” which got them on the US radar. Florence and the Machine also performed on the MTV music awards and the very next day their album hit #2 on itunes.

How does Florence and the Machine give back?

Their tour usually includes an acoustic show or two where all the proceeds go to charity. One charity that is dear to their heart is MENCAP. Mencap works with people with a learning disability to change laws, challenge prejudice and support them to live their lives as they choose.

Florence has also joined forces with Kiehl’s to design a limited edition of Creme de Corps, with all proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“Young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs. So we’re working every day to make that happen.” – Teenage Cancer Trust Website

Interesting Facts

- Florence is dyslexic

- Arcade Fire made her cry when she met them (excited cry)

- The song “Dog Days are over” has been featured on Gossip Girl, Glee, and Eat Pray Love.

- In April 2011, Florence was #51 in the 100 most influential people (Time Magazine)

  1. Believe it or not, F&TM is my new workout music. Unlikely fit for the treadmill, but it totally works.

David, if you haven’t already, give “Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah” a listen. They sound like a male version of F&TM (IMHO) – and then stop being silly about female vocalists. :)

Caanan @ No Vacation Required » I agree! Florence and the Machine make for great workout tunes. (Especially intense flow yoga classes). Glad you are checking out their new stuff. I would see them live if you get the chance.

Liane » I am so happy you like her. She has some amazing vocals. Spotify is good to “check” people out but I still like to buy music becasue then I have it at my access (computer, ipod, etc). Spotify you are forced to listen to it on your computer only and if you have an internet connection. I guess I could always upgrade and it get it to my phone but I don’t want to pay the money. Let me know what songs you end up liking. I am curious to see if we like the same ones. :)

I was just listening to her last night! Crazy timing! :)

You know I’m usually skeptical of female vocalists, mostly because I don’t want to end up singing their songs about another dude. But yeah, I can dig this one. Good choice! I challenge you to go country one of these mondays. :)

Lori Popkewitz Alper » I am very excited for their new CD. I have not heard when it’s coming out but I know they are working on it. “Lungs” is a great album if you need some new tunes to add to your playlist. Do you have spotify? If not you should look into it. I might have to do a post on that alone. I am obsessed with spotify.
